MISSION STATEMENT
The Pregnancy Help Center exists to meet the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of individuals and families facing the challenges of pregnancy and parenting.
IN THE BEGINNING...
A small group of people with a common interest was brought together in August 1990, with a desire to find a way to meet the needs of young women with unplanned pregnancies.
Coupled with the support and assistance of First Baptist Church of Lake Jackson, the Pregnancy Help Center of Brazosport was formed and began operating from a small rented space located at 202 Dixie Drive in Lake Jackson. During the first few years, the number of young women who came for help steadily increased, and the number of people and churches who wanted to help them also increased. Help was provided through one-on-one counseling as well as practical assistance was provided in terms of diapers, formula, and baby food.
H.O.P.E. WAS BORN...
A series of classes was developed, and, as a result, in 1998 the HOPE program began. These HOPE classes (Help Offered in a Pregnancy Experience) were designed to help young women develop skills in parenting, newborn care, and childbirth.
As young women seeking help continued to increase, it consequently became evident that the rented space at Dixie Drive would no longer be adequate. Although several buildings were considered by the board of directors, the board decided to design and build our own facility.
IN MARCH 1999...
The Pregnancy Help Center moved into its new 5,200-square-foot building located at 327 Garland Drive in Lake Jackson.
God’s hand of blessing was undeniably evident when, in 2004, a local couple responded to God’s prompting to donate an ultrasound machine to the PHC.
The addition of this electronic marvel has enabled many young women to view the image of their unborn child developing within them. Specifically having the ability to show these women the image of their baby has, in essence, caused many, who were considering abortion, to choose life for that child.
IN 2007...
The Pregnancy Help Center purchased an 8 bedroom, 5 bath home on 9 acres with the intention to house homeless pregnant women. Safe Haven took their first resident in February 2008.
From 2008-2016, 47 women called Safe Haven home. After living in Safe Haven until their baby was born, 11 chose to parent, 17 placed for adoption, and 2 babies did not survive. The others left the home before they delivered. In 2016, after a flood that put 8 inches of water in Safe Haven, the decision was made to close Safe Haven and focus on where we believed God had begun new work.
In 2017, the Pregnancy Help Center began focusing on helping other centers begin. PHC has had the privilege of assisting the Women’s Pregnancy Center in Bay City, the Pregnancy Help Center at the Crossroads in Port Lavaca, and the Pregnancy Help Center Galveston to become independent centers and cherish the partnership we have built.
IN THE PAST 30 YEARS...
The Pregnancy Help Center has enjoyed the incredible privilege of helping over 51,424 people. That’s 51,424 opportunities to make a difference in broken and confused lives. Today, the H.O.P.E. program includes 16 different classes. PHC has approximately 68 churches from many denominations that provide monetary support. Currently, there are now 8 paid staff members and 100+ volunteers. Indeed, the growth of this ministry in the past 30 years has been incredible.
2022 has proven to be a year of transition. With the announcement of the retirement of PHC’s 27-year veteran Director, Jackie Fuller, we were searching for a new leader. God provided! Children’s Ministry Director, Michelle Deavenport, was hired and worked alongside Jackie for four months. In addition to our new director, we finally gave life to a new Men’s Ministry. Now we can meet with partners of our female clients, offering them a chance to grow in the legacy of Fatherhood.
A Post-Roe World: The overturn of Roe v. Wade does not change our mission and goals, but only increases our passion to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals and families facing pregnancy challenges.
